media studies summary of the readings

One part of this reading that really stood out to me was in the very beggining. A student made a commetn saying, "Well, you know you cnat believe anything that Russians say." Then his professor asked well what about us, can you believe what we say. He means as a country and our media. And the professor said the student looked shocked. The student replied, "Well, of course! We are a free country. We get to hear whats really going on." As I was reading this two thoughts came to mind. One how many Americans actually believe this, that everything we hear is what is really and the only thing going on. And the second thing was how much does the media really keep from us. How much does the media really try to keep us thinking a certain way about certain topics. As I kept reading these were the things that really stood out to me and makes me concerend about what I really do not know about what is happening through out the world.

This reading really made me realize how many commercials I have watched in my life. This is becasue i watch a lot of tv but also there are so many commercials between and shows and during the 2 minute break. Just by watching one 30 mintue show i will probably watch overall more commercials than the actual show which for me is very annoying. But this is a way for networks to make alot of money. Also something that jumped out at me was that the U.S. government spent 311.3 million dollars on advertisements. When i read this it kind of upset me becuase i feel like that money could go towards more important things. Another thing that was very intriguing was how much advertisements really do affect me. All the brands that are in my home from toothpaste to shaving needs to sport drinks are because of the commercials i see and who are on the commercials. And finally i realized how creative some of these advertisemetns and commercials are and i think that is a huge reason why some advertisements and commercials are better than others and have a better affect.
